Marriage License Application Process

Scott County requires an appointment to apply for a marriage license. You must schedule your visit ahead of time. Both parties must be present when you apply. This is required by Kentucky law. You cannot apply with only one person present.

Both parties must be at least 18 years old. If either is 17, a court order is required. This process takes extra time. Plan ahead if this applies to you. Both parties should bring valid photo identification.

Accepted forms of ID include a driver's license or state ID card. Passports and military IDs also work. The names on your ID must match your application. Bring your social security card or know your number. You will need this to complete the forms.

There is no waiting period in Kentucky. You can marry the same day you receive your license. The license is valid for 30 days from the issue date. You must use it within this period. After that, it expires.

Wedding Ceremony Requirements

Two witnesses must attend your ceremony. Kentucky law requires this. The witnesses must be over 18 years old. They watch the exchange of vows. They then sign the license with the officiant.

Any ordained minister can perform your wedding. Kentucky does not register clergy. Judges and justices may also officiate. County judges and executives have this power. Retired judges may perform weddings too.

After the wedding, your officiant files the signed license. This must happen within a set time. The document returns to the Scott County Clerk. Once filed, you can request certified copies.
