How to Apply in Richmond

Both parties must appear in person to apply. This is a state law. You cannot apply by mail or online. The application requires both individuals to visit together. Bring valid photo ID for each person.

The fee for a marriage license is $60. This applies to all couples. The clerk accepts various payment methods. Contact the office to confirm current options.

You do not need to bring a birth certificate if you are over 18. You also do not need a divorce decree. The clerk does not require proof of divorce. However, you must state your marital status truthfully.

There is no waiting period. You can marry the same day you get your license. The license is valid for 30 days from the date of issue. You must use it within this time. After that, you must reapply.

Wedding Ceremony Information

After you obtain your license, you can marry anywhere in Kentucky. The license is only valid in this state. Any ordained minister or authorized officiant can perform your wedding. Kentucky does not license clergy who perform marriages.

Two witnesses must be present at the ceremony. They must be over 18 years old. The officiant and witnesses sign the license after the wedding. The signed document must be returned to the county clerk.
