How to Apply for a Marriage License

Boyd County accepts walk-in applications for marriage licenses. You do not need an appointment. Both parties must appear in person together. This rule comes from Kentucky state law. One person cannot apply for both parties.

Bring valid photo identification when you apply. A driver's license works well. A state ID card or passport also works. The names on your ID must match your application. Staff will check this during your visit.

The Catlettsburg and Ashland offices offer Saturday hours. They are open from 9 AM to 12 PM on the first and last Saturday of each month. This helps couples who cannot visit during the week. Check the schedule before you plan your visit.

Fill out the marriage license application before you arrive. Complete one form for each party. Bring both forms to the clerk's office. Staff will review your paperwork and verify your IDs. They will then process your application and issue the license.

Payment is due when you apply. The license fee is $60. Contact the office to confirm accepted payment methods. Some locations may accept cash, check, or card. Others may have different policies.

Marriage License Terms

Your license will be valid for 30 days from the date of issue. The clock starts on the day the clerk gives you the document. You must hold your ceremony within this window. After 30 days, the license expires. You would need to reapply and pay the fee again.

The license is only valid within Kentucky state lines. You cannot use it in Ohio or West Virginia. You must marry somewhere in the Commonwealth. Many couples pick local churches or scenic spots for their ceremonies.

Kentucky has no waiting period for marriage licenses. You can marry right after you get your license. Some couples apply and marry on the same day. This gives you flexibility in your wedding plans.

You do not need to live in Boyd County to apply here. Kentucky has no residency requirement. Out-of-state couples can obtain licenses in Boyd County. This makes it easy for couples from neighboring states to marry here.

Wedding Ceremony Guidelines

Two witnesses must attend your ceremony. Kentucky law requires this. The witnesses must be over 18 years old. They must watch the full ceremony. Then they must sign the marriage license. The bride and groom cannot serve as witnesses.

Any ordained minister can perform your wedding. Kentucky does not license clergy. Judges may also officiate ceremonies. You have many options for choosing your officiant. Pick someone who fits your needs and beliefs.

After the wedding, your officiant must return the signed license. This must happen within 30 days. The document goes back to the Boyd County Clerk's office. Once filed, you can request certified copies of your marriage certificate.

Obtaining Marriage Records

The Boyd County Clerk keeps all marriage records on file. You can request certified copies at any of the three office locations. Provide the full names of both parties when making your request. Include the marriage date if you know it.

Certified copies cost a fee per document. Call ahead for current pricing. Most couples order two or three copies. You will need them for name changes and other legal tasks.

The Kentucky Office of Vital Statistics also keeps marriage records. They have certificates from 1958 to the present. You can order from the state office if needed. They offer online and mail ordering options for your convenience.
