How to Apply for a Marriage License

Both parties must come to the office together. This rule applies to all applicants in Grayson County. You cannot apply by proxy or send one person alone. The clerk needs to see both of you in person. Bring valid photo ID for each person applying.

The license is valid for 30 days only. This time frame includes the day you get it. You must use it within this window. If you wait too long, it will expire. You would need to apply and pay again.

You can marry the same day you get the license. Kentucky has no waiting period at all. Many couples get their license and marry right away. This works well for those with set wedding dates. Just make sure your officiant is free that day.

The license is only good in Kentucky. You cannot use it in other states. Plan to have your ceremony within the Commonwealth. Choose any county in Kentucky for your wedding. The license works statewide once issued.

Wedding Ceremony Requirements

Your ceremony needs two adult witnesses. They must watch the whole event. Both must sign the license after the vows. The officiant must also sign the form. These signatures make your marriage legal and binding.

Kentucky lets many people officiate weddings. Ministers do not need state licenses. Judges and justices may also perform ceremonies. You have freedom to choose who leads your service. Just make sure they are willing to sign and file the papers.

After the wedding, return the signed license. The officiant must send it back within 30 days. It goes back to the Grayson County Clerk. Once filed, your marriage is on record. You can then request copies of your certificate.

Marriage Records and Certified Copies

The clerk keeps all marriage records for Grayson County. These go back many years in some cases. You can ask for copies at the office. Bring the names and dates you need. Staff will search and find the right record.

Certified copies cost a small fee each. You will need these for legal name changes. Banks and the DMV may want to see them. Order a few copies when you first request them. This saves time later when you need proof of marriage.

The state also keeps marriage records. The Office of Vital Statistics has them from 1958 onward. If local records are hard to find, try the state. They offer mail and online ordering. Visit their site for forms and fees.
